

The most I’ve seen is Alan mentioning in an interview that it wasn’t considered as a single. But Not Tonight This is possibly Depeche Mode’s most underrated song its powerful lyrics have the perfect balance of moodiness and positivism. What’s bewildering is that it’s barely acknowledged by the band, even at the time, despite it opening the Exotic tour. Their music is not on Spotify, but you can find them on Soundcloud and on YouTube. It’s one of my top 5 DM songs, and I honestly screams this is a single to me.


Standouts from Storybook include Refrain Intro / Lighter Than, Back Inside, Together, and Cocaine. After releasing just an EP and this album the band broke up - but I saw drummer Frank Ferrer touring with the Psychedelic Furs a couple years later, after which he joined (and remains with) Guns and Roses. Pennebaker is a master documentary filmmaker and it shows with 101. Imagine reading his list of wants on a personals. Look at the detail and depth of thought that Martin Gore puts into what he wants in a woman. You never hear it mentioned as an all-time great or get radio airtime, but the song is fantastic. As you look back on the film (it was filmed in 1988) you realize the contribution Depeche Mode has made to electronic music (especially in the live performance arena). The album cover to The Beautiful‘s album Storybook caught my eye, but not knowing anything about them, I opened the jewel case and say that their album was engineered/produced by John Fryer, who is one of the most accomplished engineers and producers in the new wave and 4AD music world, working with bands like Nine Inch Nails, Cocteau Twins, Depeche Mode, Dead Can Dance, and many more.
